Aquatic & Fisheries DST Pitch & Roll Star-Oddi.com

Small submersible pitch and roll logger with additional temperature and depth sensors

Overview:
Sensors: pitch and roll, temperature and depth
Memory size:  348,000  measurements in total
Battery life: 5 years
Depth: down to 3000m

Application examples:

  • The DST pitch and roll addition to measuring temperature and depth, it also measures relative pitch and roll movements of the DST, with reference to the earth gravity. The measuring parameters are measuring the gravity movements in two directions.
  • The DST pitch and roll tag allows the scientist to make frequent samplings of the orientation of the fish using different sampling intervals. Measuring resolution is better than 1°.
  • The sensor can be used for analysing movements of marine animals as well as various underwater gear. For analysing fish movements, it is advised to fasten the tag at both ends for avoiding / limiting movements of the tag. The tag has a measuring range of approximately +/- 80° in each direction.
  • For analysing fish movements/orientation in relation to buoyancy (gas in/out from swimming bladder).
  • Analysing fish target strength in acoustic surveys in relation to their behaviour and orientation, for improving biomass estimations.
  • Finding pattern in fish behaviour, diurnal/seasonal, for improving acoustic surveys estimation of biomass.
  • Analysing orientation of trawl doors and other fishing gear.

The picture shows the measuring directions of the sensor relative to the DST housing.

Easy to use

DST pitch and roll is supported by the SeaStar software for Windows, and a communication box which connects it to a PC computer.  All communication and data transfer is wireless via the communication box.  DST is inserted into the box for establishing communication, using the SeaStar software.  Before use the user sets the sampling interval and start time of recordings.  After recapture of the logger, the data is retrieved using the communication box and SeaStar software.  The logger can be re-programmed and reused as long as the battery lasts.
