It is also available as a temperature recorder only (DST milli-T). All measurements are time related, utilising a real time clock inside the DST. Various depth (calibration) ranges can be selected, up to 900 m (2953 feet) Battery life typically >3 years (DST milli/milli-L) and >2 years (DST milli-F) Easy to use DST milli is supported by the SeaStar software for Windows, and a communication box which connects to a PC computer.  All communications and data transfer is wireless via the communication box.  Prior to usage, and for data retrieval, the DST is inserted into the box for establishing communication through the SeaStar software.  The user sets the start date/time and sampling interval.    After recapture of DST, the data is retrieved to a PC computer, using the communication box and software.  After retrieving the data, the DST can be re-programmed and reused as long as the battery lasts.

Programming options
The user selects the sampling interval when starting the loggers.  With default programming, depth and temperature is recorded as pairs. The total memory size is then divided between the two sensors. An option when programming a sampling interval in the software, is to have more frequent samplings for either the depth or temperature. For example if the depth is of more interest, a more frequent sampling interval can be set for that parameter, making it a primary parameter. That way the majority of the memory size can be used either for depth or temperature. 
If the logger is programmed with a single interval, it records at the same interval through the whole measurement period.  An option is to select mulitple intervals within a measurement sequence.  That way the recordings automatically shift to a different interval within the measurement period.  Up to 7 different sampling intervals can be defined within a measurement sequence.  This is especially useful when more frequent measurements are needed at a certain time period, for example during spawning period of fish.

Applications
DST milli is specially designed for tagging fish for analysing fish migration, distribution, feeding behavior, vertical  and horizontal movements.  DST milli can be implanted into the fish or fastened externally.  For external tagging, Star-Oddi can provide a tag holder kit.  For internal tagging the DST can be delivered with a plastic tube attached, which hangs out to the exterior of the fish, for fishermen to identify the tagged fish. 

DST milli is also used for tagging other marine animals such as seabirds, crabs and turtles.  The recaptured DSTs provide valuable information on the behavioral patterns of the tagged animal.  For recapture purposes, customers can define their own text that is burnt into the housings. The housing is made of bio-compatible material, which does not endanger the health of the tagged animal. The non-transparent housing ensures that the sunlight does not affect the measuring and therefore provides more reliable data.
