Starmon mini: Celebrating a decade of temperature monitoring

Since its release a decade ago the Starmon mini has proven to be a valuable research tool for temperature recordings. The strong exterior of the Starmon mini renders it especially resistant and ideal for measuring temperature in oceans, rivers, lakes and other harsh environmental conditions.
With temperature accuracy better than +/-0.05°C and battery life of 10 years (replaceable battery), the Starmon mini is known for its excellent reliability and durability.  The Starmon mini has a non-corrosive plastic housing but can also be supplied in a titanium housing for deep ocean (>400 m) researches.

Standard memory size is 350,000 but can be extended upon request.  Standard temperature calibration range is -2°C to +40°C but higher range (up to 90°C) is available upon request.

New housing for tilt and compass DSTs

Star-Oddi now offers the Adjustable Housing for the DST loggers with tilt and compass (magnetic) sensors. It as applicable for for use on fishing gear, and various equipment. The housing enables researchers to easily mount the logger to the subject. It can be either bolted or strapped. The DST logger can be fixed inside the housing with a clamp, preventing it from moving inside, which is important for the quality of the measurements. The housing also protects the DST data logger inside.

Ásgeir Bjarnason receives the Annual Presidential Innovation Award

On March 2nd biomedical engineering student Ásgeir Bjarnason received the 15th annual Innovation Award which is handed out by the president of Iceland. The award is granted to those students who have excelled in projects funded by the Student Innovation Fund.

Ásgeir, whose project involved designing and developing sensors, worked in collaboration with Star-Oddi under the guidance of Sigmar Guðbjörnsson and Hákon Óli Guðmundsson. We at Star-Oddi would like to congratulate Ásgeir on his outstanding achievement.

 Dormant volcano springs to life

Around 23:30 on Saturday March 20th a volcano erupted next to Eyjafjallajökul, the fifth largest glacier in Iceland. This volcano hasn‘t erupted since 1820 and is located about 160 km southeast of the capital Reykjavik. Authorities evacuated the area closest to the glacier due to fears of glacial meltdown, which could cause major floods.
A volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull could trigger another eruption at Katla volcano which lies underneath Myrdalsjökull glacier potentially causing massive flooding. The last three times that Eyjafjalljökull has erupted Katla has followed suit.  Iceland sits on a hotspot for volcanic eruptions, most happen in rural areas where there is little or no danger to people or animals.
Breaking news:
A new eruption started this morning in another area of Eyjafjallajökull. The eruption is located under a glacier which has substantially increased water level and flow. We will continue following the news about the eruption.
