A Japanese feast
The Star-Oddi team recently attended a course in sushi making. We learned about the origins of sushi, the different varieties that exist and the interesting culture that surrounds the food.
The dish originates from Japan and its main ingredient is rice added with vinegar. The rice can be combined with various ingredients, the most common being seafood.
Sushi is usually served with soy sauce and wasabi which is a spicy paste. It is also commonly served with pickled ginger which is used to clean the palate in between bites.
We made both maki and nigiri. Maki is rolled up sushi wrapped in seaweed. Nigiri is hand formed sushi where the rice is moulded into a pillow and a topping is added, usually salmon or tuna.
We all had a great time making the sushi which was actually easier than many of us thought, although a bit messy. Afterwards we all enjoyed the fruits of our labour.
