Tilt measurements in 3-D

Star-Oddi‘s DST tilt measures tilt in three directions, depth (pressure) and temperature. The DST tilt data logger has been on the market for a few years and has been well received by scientists worldwide. Whom are mainly doing studies on fishing gear and valuable underwater equipment for orientation studies at different depths.

Star-Oddi has designed a special adjustable housing for securing the logger. The housing has a mounting bracket inside where the logger can be immobilised, preventing it from rolling inside. The shape of the housing is designed so that it can be bolted to a flat surface or strapped on a cable. Housing material is robust polyethelyne.

The DST tilt has an accuracy of +/-3° over a range of +/-180°. For more information, please visit the DST tilt product site.

PatternFinder Case Study: Detecting spawning patterns

The main objective of this case study is to demonstrate how to detect spawning patterns of the Atlantic cod with PatternFinder.

The case study is based on data analysis in relation to the article Lunacy in Atlantic cod: Assessing the timing of spawning in Atlantic cod using ocean models and electronic data storage tags by Timothy B. Grabowski. The sample data was provided by the Marine Research Institute of Iceland. The data is from a DST Centi recorder, manufactured by Star-Oddi.

                                                   Depth signature                                         Pattern analysis results

Grabowski who was using over 100 tags described the program as a "real time saver" that could have "shortened his work from nine months down to one or two months".

Data Storage Tags - DSTs

Star-Oddi has been manufacturing and developing DSTs since 1993. The data loggers are used for various studies, such as fish tagging, fishing gear studies and oceanography. You can find our whole product range here. The following sensors are available:

A Japanese feast

The Star-Oddi team recently attended a course in sushi making. We learned about the origins of sushi, the different varieties that exist and the interesting culture that surrounds the food.

The dish originates from Japan and its main ingredient is rice added with vinegar. The rice can be combined with various ingredients, the most common being seafood.

Sushi is usually served with soy sauce and wasabi which is a spicy paste. It is also commonly served with pickled ginger which is used to clean the palate in between bites.

We made both maki and nigiri. Maki is rolled up sushi wrapped in seaweed. Nigiri is hand formed sushi where the rice is moulded into a pillow and a topping is added, usually salmon or tuna.

We all had a great time making the sushi which was actually easier than many of us thought, although a bit messy. Afterwards we all enjoyed the fruits of our labour.
