Is there anybody listening?
Star-Oddi has developed a prototype of an acoustic listening Data Storage Tag, called DST sonic. The sound recorder is user programmable to listen to certain frequency range at user defined intervals and store in its memory.
A first version has already been used for detecting sound levels generated by fish, storing up to 4 million measurements.
A second version will be developed if market demand exists. The intention is take the DST sonic to the next level and store data from on-board sound analyzing, storing for example sound frequency and other sound parameters. A few different frequency ranges could be detected, up to maximum 60 KHz.
In addition to recording sound, depth (pressure) and temperature can also be recorded if desired. All measurements are time stamped, utilising a real time clock inside the tag.
Due to the fact that DST sonic is at a prototype stage the delivery time is much longer than other DST products from Star-Oddi. We are looking for feedback from you about the market need for a small sound recorder like the DST sonic. We urge those who see an opportunity in using the product in their research to contact Star-Oddi with a request. Any feedback is welcomed and very much appreciated. Visit the DST sonic product site.

Exploring the Blautopf resurgence
The Blautopf resurgence is the second largest karst spring in Germany with a mean discharge of around 2200 litres per second. Since 1997 a group of German cave divers, called "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Blautopf" is in the process of systematically exploring and mapping the underground cave system behind the Blautopf resurgence. The current length stands at 8,7 km, making it the fourth-longest cave system in Germany.
For many years, access to the huge cave network was only possible by means of cave diving. However, in 2010 an artificial shaft was drilled down from the surface, providing dry access to the remote area behind the 1,2 km long sump. This provided researchers from Arbeitsgemeinschaft Blautopf with the possibility to initiate an extensive scientific research program.
Star Oddi was generous enough to support the scientific program by providing the team with Centi TD loggers, which were installed at different locations within the subterranean river. The goal is to monitor water level and temperature as a function of rainfall events on the surface. These parameters will be used to correlate water flow with water chemistry and microbiological data, to track the impact of a large sewage treatment plant some 10 km north-west of the Blautopf resurgence.

Humidity monitoring with DewMon
Star-Oddi has launched DewMon, a new product for monitoring air humidity together with temperature and pressure, giving dew-point.
Machinery users and manufacturers can access the information online and take actions if necessary. That way users can prevent damage to costly machinery caused by critical dew-point level.
DewMon can be used to monitor air conditions surrounding various machinery. Read more on the DewMon product page.

An autumn tradition
A clear sign that autumn is approacing is the traditional roundup of sheep or "réttir".
In Iceland farmers send their sheep to roam the mountains during the summer. This was originally done in order to protect the pastures which were very valuable, but the tradition has been maintained to this day.
In the autumn farmers travel up to the mountains to gather the sheep. Once the sheep have been herded back they are rounded up in a special fold where they are sorted by farms. The roundup attracts a lot of tourists and guests from Reykjavik and Iceland's bigger towns. It is also an important social event on the countryside and is usually celebrated with a big dance.
