DST bird - geolocator with light & temperature sensors

Geolocator light and temperature bird logger

Key features

  • Geolocator for birds, for studying their long distance migration patterns
  • Data can be imported into advanced software packages for geolocation analysis
  • Also suitable for other studies such as monitoring light levels and temperature in sediments
  • Small dimensions of 19 mm x 8.5 mm x 8.5 mm, weighs only 2 g in air
  • Pressure survival down to 150 m

The DST bird geolocator is a very small logger with light level and temperature sensors.  Recorded data is stored in the logger‘s internal memory with a real time clock reference for each measurement.

For activating the geolocator it is inserted into the communication box which serves as an interface between the logger and a PC computer.

In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder. Up to seven different intervals can be set for the same measurement sequence. This is especially useful when more frequent measurements are needed at a certain time periods.

With default programming light and temperature are recorded as pairs. Optionally, they can be set as primary and secondary parameters with different sampling intervals. That way memory partitioning can be customized according to individual preferences.

After recovering the DST recorded data is uploaded in the supporting software where results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form. Data can also be imported as text file into more advanced softwares for geolocation analysing.  After retrieving the data, the DST can be re-programmed and reused as long as the battery lasts.

A set of Communication Box and SeaStar software needs to be purchased with the first order.

Examples of Application

DST bird is designed as a geolocator for tagging birds to collect information on bird migration tracking. The very small and lightweight tag opens up possibilities for bird scientists to tag small birds that little migration information exist on. The geolocator has an attachment hole of 2 mm in diameter and a cable tie is supplied with each unit. With large amount of temperature and light datapoints from tags, the scientist is able to analyse bird migration route with approximate geolocation (latitude and longitude) at given dates and times. For geolocation analysis the data can be imported into advanced software packages, including the PatternFinder data analysis software which displays the data in Google Earth. Orange lines on globe below show a migratory route of a bird.

The DST bird is suitable for use within:

  • Bird geolocation studies for bird migration tracking
  • Sediment monitoring
