Description
Compact and durable

The robust time depth recorder (TDR) Starmon TD is designed to withstand harsh conditions and long-term deployment subsea or in aquatic environments. It is durable with its robust and non-corrosive titanium housing, 236mm x 40mm in dimensions. A calibration certificate is delivered with each instrument.

Application

The Starmon TD is applicable for a wide array of research:
- Oceanography and aquatic research - long term stationary monitoring or surveying
- Fisheries research – attach the TDR to fishing gear, both for scientific and commercial use
- Data collection on underwater vehicles, AUV, ROV, subsea cables and more
- Geothermal wells or boreholes
Fast and accurate

The temperature sensor has a fast response of 2 seconds and the depth sensor has immediate response. Depth accuracy is +/-0.3% of full range and temperature accuracy is +/-0.025°C. Sampling intervals are user programmable and can be set as fast as 20 recordings per second (20Hz).

Long life rechargeable battery and large memory

The rechargeable battery can last months or years on a single charge, depending on recording interval used. For example a single charge lasts three months on a 1 second interval. The battery can be fully charged at least 500 times. Battery can be replaced, if needed. Memory size is 8.4 million recordings per sensor.

Easy to attach to gear

For flexible mounting, Starmon TD has an attachment hole and two slots for strapping to moorings, nets or deployment lines. See the Accessories tab for optional housings to give more flexible mounting.
Using the logger
Simple in Use, From Setup to Data Retrieval

The logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the recorder, attaching it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the SeaStar software and a standard USB cable which have to be purchased with the first order.

Setting up the Logger

To launch the time depth recorder for measuring, the end cap of the housing is unscrewed and a USB cable connects directly from the recorder to a PC computer. In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder in measurement mode. The logger synchronizes its internal clock with the date & time on the computer being used.

Memory and Battery Life Calculations

The software automatically calculates when memory fills based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimation on energy consumption on single charge during the study length is also calculated. It is also possible to have the software do memory and battery calculations for a specific measuring period.

Uploading the Data

After recovering the logger device, it is connected via the USB cable to the PC and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs. The time series data shows each measurement with its own time stamp.

Low energy consumption

After data retrieval the logger can be restarted or put into sleep mode for later use. Battery life estimation is always reported upon connection with the logger. Due to the low energy consumption circuitry design the battery life is long, but the lifetime depends on usage and sampling interval used. The battery is rechargeable.

Accessories
USB Cable

To connect to the data logger a standard USB cable is needed. The USB cable is purchased with the first order. The cable connects between the logger and a PC computer.

SeaStar software

The SeaStar software for Windows is needed to operate the logger. Data is displayed in a graph and table. The time series data file can be opened in other programs. An installation product key is provided when ordering the software, for online downloading. All updates are free of charge.

Stainless Steel Housing

For more flexible mounting options and protection when used in harsh conditions a stainless steel housing is available. It is ideal for securely fastening the temperature and depth measuring device to fishing gear and various subsea gear.

Curved Housing

A curved shaped plastic housing is available, giving more flexible mounting and protection. The housing comes with steel bolts, washers and nuts to clamp the two curved plastic parts, securely holding the logger in place.

Curved and Flat Housing

A sturdy housing solution for bolting to a flat surface. It consists of two plastic parts, one has curved shape and the other is flat bottom. The housing comes with steel bolts to fasten the two parts, holding the logger in a secure and fixed position.

Single Plate Holder

When attaching the data logger to a flat surface on a subsea equipment a single plate holder with a set of plastic brackets is available. The brackets secure a stable position of the sensor.
